Selection criteria

Submission details:
Presentation design: 2 x A2 (organizers will arrange printing of boards)
Transmission format: High-resolution pdf’s
Identification: No name of student or school should appear as part of the design proposal. Shortlisting is judged anonymously.

Deadline: Friday 13 October 2017

Shortlisting/final judging:
  • Shortlisting will take place in London on 3 November 2017
  • Finalists (up to six) will be notified the following week
  • Finalists will be expected to present their proposals at WAF Berlin. WAF takes place in Berlin from 15 to 17 November
  • NB please check in advance if you would have visa requirements
  • Each shortlisted entrant should give a 10-minute presentation (max)
  • There will then be up to 10 minutes of questions from the judges
  • Presentations will take place on the morning of Friday 17 November
  • The winner will receive their award at the WAF Gala Dinner that evening
  • Merck will arrange travel, hotels and Festival passes for finalists and judges
Judges:
  • Sara Klomps (Zaha Hadid Architects), Lisa Rammig (Eckersley O’Callaghan, engineers), Celine Glipa (Merck)
  • Paul Finch, AR Editorial Director and WAF Programme Director will chair the shortlisting jury
  • Jan Wurm of Arup will chair the final jury in Berlin
Recognition
  • All finalists will receive a certificate
  • The winner will receive a certificate and trophy at the WAF awards dinner
  • Merck intends to work with the winner to put the design into production
  • The pavilion will be displayed in the innovation area of glass technology live 2018
  • The Architectural Review will feature the award via a double-page spread featuring the winner and referencing all finalists
  • There will be coverage of the competition on the WAF website
  • Copyright of designs will remain with the author; however Merck, WAF and the AR may use images in connection with the competition and subsequent publicity free of copyright
Other matters
  • Judges may make high commendations if they wish
  • No correspondence will be entered into in relation to the running of the competition
  • However, questions may be submitted to WAF’s Programme Director paul.finch@emap.com by 1 September
  • Questions and answers will be published on the competition microsite
